Welcome
We are delighted to invite marine biologists from across the region to the 3rd West Pacific Marine Biology Symposium, to be held at The University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane, Australia from 25–28 November 2025.
The Western Pacific Ocean is the most biodiverse region on Earth, encompassing intricate coral reef systems as well as distinct northern and southern temperate habitats. It also supports highly diverse fisheries and some of the world’s most advanced and innovative aquaculture.
The West Pacific Marine Biology Network (WPMBN), launched by CNRS Biologie in France, fosters collaboration among researchers in France, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, South Korea, and other nations in the region to understand, protect, and harness the potential of marine life in the western Pacific.
This year’s Symposium will focus on the biological mechanisms that underpin organismal and ecosystem function and health, and how marine organisms develop and adapt to increasingly rapid environmental changes, and contribute to sustainable bioeconomies.
The UQ Centre for Marine Science and CNRS Biologie welcome marine biologists at all research career stages—from students, postdocs, to early-career and established researchers—to present and discuss their work in an open, collaborative environment.
Optional excursions to UQ’s Heron Island Research Station and Moreton Bay Research Station will also be available before and after the meeting.
Topics covered
The Symposium will cover a broad range of topics related to research of marine biology, ecology and evolution, including but not limited to:
- Molecular, cellular, microbial biology
- Developmental biology
- Genomics and other omics
- Holobionts and microbiomes
- Eco-evo-devo
- Organismal & cellular communication
- Organismal & cellular behaviour
- Sensory systems
- Biochemistry including biogeochemistry
- Ecophysiology
